University College Cork Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Science (Ecological Assessment)
This Postgraduate Diploma programme will facilitate students to acquire key practical skills in the ecological assessment of terrestrial and freshwater habitats and ecosystems in order to meet a growing demand for personnel skilled in methods of ecological assessment and to ensure that this process is underpinned by a sound, scientific, theoretical framework. The subjects undertaken by me include the following:

Legislation and the Natural Environment
Applications of Geographical Information Systems
Aquatic invertebrates

2008 Lantra Awards- Professional Tree Inspection
This course was undertaken in the UK provided a specific tree inspection training programme at an advanced professional level for competent arboriculturists to enable them to reach a level of competence acceptable as having received adequate training.
2003-2004 International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). Qualification Obtained: ISA Certified Arborist
2000-2002 University of Aberdeen, Scotland.
Qualification Obtained: Bachelor Degree in Arboriculture and Amenity Forestry.The degree incorporated all aspects of tree care management in both an urban and rural context. Subjects studied include pathology and entomology, forest planning, soil science, community ecology and silviculture.
1996-1999 Myerscough College, Preston, Lancashire, England.
Qualification Obtained: National Diploma in Arboriculture.
The three-year diploma covered all aspects of tree care from climbing through to the identification of pests and diseases. The course had an extensive practical focus and the entire second year involved a co-op placement in a tree care consultancy firm in Italy.
Experience Nov 2005- Present
I returned from Canada in September 2005 after working as a consulting arborist for three years with a prominent Tree Care company in Toronto, to establish my own company, Arbor-Care Professional Consulting Tree Service covering all aspect of tree preservation.
Arbor Care recently won the BEST NEW BUSINESS 2008 as voted by the Limerick Enterprise Board.
Michael Garry is a current Board member of Crann. Crann is an NGO organization set up to raise awareness of the environmental importance of trees, hedgerows and woodland.
To date Arbor-Care have undertaken projects for the following,
1 National Roads Authority.
Arbor-Care recently wrote a document for the NRA, Guidelines for the Protection and Preservation of Trees, Hedgerows and Scrub prior to, during and post construction of national road schemes. This document was recently published on the NRA web site and is available for review.
2 Enviroco Management.
Enviroco Management is a medium sized environmental consulting company based in the midlands, I have undertake large-scale tree surveys on their behalf involving large-scale development.
3. Fingal Co. Council & Dunlaoighre/Rathdown Co. Council
I have undertaken many tree surveys and valuations on various projects for these councils.
4.London Borough of Islington Council.
I undertook a four month contract working as a Tree Preservation Officer with Islington Borough Council. Working in the planning department, I supervised and worked with planners offering advice on tree related issues for planning and pre-planning applications.
